Secret Recipe: The Philadelphia St. Patty’s Day Treat You’ve Been Missing

AFR Furniture Rental was founded in the city of Philadelphia in 1975—way back before our early American Furniture Rentals moniker was officially abbreviated to AFR. This was back when our burgeoning company existed as just another well-respected local business in the Philly area, and we were still years away from the national presence we have grown to become.

And since we’re Philly natives through and through, we’re some of the only folks who are allowed to reveal the identity of a tasty top-secret St. Patty’s Day treat; one the good people in the City of Brotherly Love have been enjoying every single March for roughly a century or more…

Irish Potatoes!

Wait...potatoes? That’s it?!

What if we told you Irish potatoes aren’t potatoes at all, nor do they contain any potato ingredients oddly enough? Irish potatoes are a sweet seasonal snack originating in Philadelphia—so that means, despite the name, they aren’t even really from Ireland!

Weird, right? So now we know what they’re not. But what are Irish potatoes? Well, they’re more like…

Delicious Candy!

That’s right, Irish potatoes are yummy sugary confections and the result of rolling sweet, chilled coconut-flavored cream filling in cinnamon so they resemble tiny potatoes. In the recipe below, we’re also going to add some delicious cream cheese to the mix to kick up that Philadelphia spirit even more.

Irish potatoes usually take about 30 minutes to prepare and will last in the fridge for up to a week. Plus, the simple ingredients and kid-friendly recipe make them as fun to make as they are to eat for the whole family.

7 Simple Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
    (2 ounces)
  • ½ of an 8 ounce package of cream cheese, softened
    (4 ounces—light/less fat works too)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
    (also known as confectioners’ sugar)
  • 2 ⅔ cups sweetened shredded coconut flakes
    (7 ounces—unsweetened works too)
  • 1-2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon
(to taste, a light coating is best)

Step #1: Mix cream cheese, butter, vanilla extract, and salt until even using stand or hand mixer.

Step #2: Add powdered sugar and mix. Add coconut flakes and mix again. Chill in refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Step #3: Pour cinnamon onto a shallow dish. Separate small amounts of filling mixture (about a tablespoon each) and roll into small balls. Roll filling in cinnamon for a light coating. Set aside on plate and they’re ready to serve—or refrigerate and enjoy delicious homemade Irish potatoes for up to one week!
