The story of AFR begins modestly in 1975 with American Furniture Rentals, an up-and-coming residential furniture rental corporation in Philadelphia. The Company was acquired by CEO Neil Scholnick in 1983 who, along with co-CEO Jerry Hellman, envisioned reaching new potential clients outside of the Philadelphia area. Together the like-minded industry veterans developed plans for expanding national presence, products, and services – starting with the extension of office furniture rentals for commercial clients.
Beginning in 1996 and continuing over the next decade, strategically located distribution centers began to emerge along the East Coast in places like Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Florida. Along the way, AFR absorbed other promising furniture rental businesses that aligned with the Company’s core service goals including Nationwide Furniture Rentals, Best Furniture Rental, IFR Furniture Rentals, and Aaron’s Corporate Furnishings in Philadelphia.
The Company leveraged proven process and logistics expertise in 2006 to make an exciting entrance in the event and trade show industries. Sights set on delivering residential, commercial, special event, and trade show services to clients across the United States, AFR grew westward over the next 15 years, opening new locations in Nevada, Texas, California, Georgia, Illinois, Arizona, Washington, and Oregon. Room Service Rentals, Plush Event Furnishings, Aaron Rents Office Division, Agile Trade Show Furnishings, People’s Furniture Rental, and kool. Party Rentals were also acquired during this period.
In 2022, AFR proudly announced a recapitalization transaction in conjunction with the Global Special Situations team of J.P. Morgan Global Alternatives. “Taking this step will serve to fortify our ability to move confidently forward with a clear vision for the future.” said Neil Scholnick, Executive Chairman and CEO of AFR. “This investment will allow us to emerge [from the pandemic] even stronger than before and will help us continually improve the company that our clients have come to know and love.”
